Hospital Playground
An imaginative approach to conceptual healing environments.
Hospital Playground is an original SCstudio concept exploring how healthcare environments for children and families could feel warmer, more human and more imaginative. Rather than treating play as a separate room or amenity, the concept places it at the heart of the environment, transforming a conventional hospital atrium into an immersive landscape of treehouses, bridges, sensory spaces, quiet retreats and places to explore.

CLARITY
Hospitals must perform complex clinical functions, but for children and families they can also be unfamiliar, intimidating environments. We began with a simple question: what if the experience of arriving at and moving through a children’s hospital felt less institutional and more welcoming?
The concept establishes a clear environmental idea around nature, discovery and play. A monumental tree becomes the organising feature of the space, creating an intuitive visual landmark around which patient rooms, family spaces, circulation and shared amenities can coexist.
POSSIBILITY
From that starting point, we imagined the hospital as an interconnected world rather than a collection of corridors and waiting rooms. Elevated walkways, treehouse rooms, slides, sensory activities, reading spaces, gardens and sheltered nooks create different ways for children and families to engage with the environment.
Play is considered broadly, from energetic exploration to tactile discovery, storytelling, social interaction and quiet moments of retreat. The architecture itself becomes part of the experience, offering moments of curiosity and choice throughout the building.
TRANSFORMATION
The result is a speculative vision of a healthcare environment in which clinical function and imaginative experience are not competing ideas. Natural forms, warm materials, planting, soft lighting and playful architecture transform the hospital atrium into a place with its own character, rhythm and sense of discovery.
Hospital Playground demonstrates SCstudio’s approach to immersive environments: looking beyond the expected function of a space and asking how creative thinking, storytelling and experience design might completely change the way that space feels to the people within it.
